Flats for rent for exchange students

Do you need a flat to live in Budapest?

Unfortunately incoming exchange students can not be accommodated at the university's dormitories. You are responsible to make your own arrangements for finding a permanent place for your time in Budapest, but we are going to organize the Flat Searching event for you on the Orientation Week. During this event we help you to find flat-mates and a proper flat near the university. We also help you to get to the flats, where we assist the communication between you and the flat owners.

You can find a flat by your own of course (and we’d be happy if all of you would find an accommodation by your arrival, because you’d be more relaxed in the first week already :) ), this Flat Searching Event is just an option: we gladly help you in this important matter. This service is completely free of charge.

Here are some hostels recommended to you for the time until you find a permanent solution.

Where can you search for flats?

On our homepage during August/January we'll add a list of flats also, for your information. This list contains advertisements from current erasmus students looking for flatmates or flats recommended by former erasmus students. The list of available flats will be changing and expanding all the time. I would suggest checking the site regularly - if you like any of the flats, please get in contact with the given address, the ESN flat searching team is not responsible for the rental transaction, and cannot find flats for specific persons because we are not an agency.

For rents you should check the following pages. These websites lead directly to the owner, the prices are more reasonable:

  • http://renthungary.com/
  • http://www.sc.bme.hu/en/index.php?pText=4_6_1 (Check out the hungarian advertisements as well)

For the permanent accommodation, there are some agencies which offer shared accommodation on-line. You might also want to check them out before coming to Budapest. Previous exchange students found these useful in finding permanent accommodation in Budapest:

  • http://budapest.craigslist.org/apa

Do not transfer or give any money to the "owners" before you've seen the flat and got the keys!

Which part of Budapest do we recommend?

The university is in the 11th district, but it is a huge district. You should start looking for flats near (~1.5 km) the university or flats with good public transportation.

The foreign students mostly prefer the Pest side (left side of the Danube) near the tramline 4-6 or 47-49. (http://bkv.hu/ftp/terkepek/bpmetro.pdf). Easy to reach the university and also the bars. The best districts: 5th, 6th, 7th, 9th

What you should avoid:

  • the 8th district far (~300m) from the mentionned tramlines.
  • The districts far from downtown or the metro and tram lines.
